Maastricht Centre for European Law
The Maastricht Centre for European Law is a large research community in the domain of European law. It consists of some 30 scholars, who are all members of staff of Maastricht University’s Faculty of Law. Its current directors are Prof. Bruno De Witte and Prof. Ellen Vos. The Centre covers a broad range of areas of research in both institutional and substantive EU law, the law of the Council of Europe, and the relation between European law and national law.
Activities
The activities of the Centre include the organization of academic conferences and workshops, the organization of a regular series of lunch research seminars and of occasional visiting lectures, the development of externally funded research in areas of interest to the Centre, and the supervision and facilitation of doctoral research in cooperation with the Maastricht Graduate School of Law. The scholars of the Centre are actively engaged in the educational programme offered by Maastricht University, mainly within the bachelor and master programmes of the Faculty of Law, but also in some other, non-legal study programmes.
The scholars of the Centre participate in the Ius Commune Research School and the School of Human Rights Research, both of which are inter-university research consortia of which Maastricht University is a partner. The research of the Centre is disseminated through the usual channels for publications, and also by means of the Maastricht Working Papers in Law.
Benefitting from the fact that other scholars in the field of European integration are located in Maastricht, the Centre works in (close) collaboration with scholars based in the Political Science department of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) and in the European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA).
