From 2007 European bison live freely in the Dutch dune area, the Kraansvlak. Started with 6 individuals from Poland, calves are born every year.
Started in 2007 with 220 hectares, the Kraansvlak has been extended to more than 300 hectares along the years. Together with the wisents, a herd of konik horses, fallow deer, roe deer and rabbits, inhabit the area.
Combined with other large grazers, European bison foraging behaviour play an unique role in the conservation of the scarce grey dunes and thus of the fauna and flora species associated to them.
The continuous scientific research during this wisent pilot has produced valuable knowledge and experience of this protected species regarding several aspects as: foraging behaviour, habitat use, activity pattern, interaction with other grazers and their response to human presence as main topics. Meanwhile the pilot is extended to 2017.
