As a child they often ask you what you want to be when you grow up. This question has been on my mind ever since.
After my graduation I was eager to work, learn and gain experience in different fields. A number of jobs and studies passed. I was searching for something that would fit my persona, expressed my creativity and would feed my soul.
In 2007 photography caught my eye. The challenge of capturing emotions, vibe and movement into one frame inspired me. I started taking shots of random people at a series of different events and parties.
After all these years my question was finally answered. I wanted to become a professional photographer.
In 2008 I officially started as freelance photographer under the name Picturick Photography. It was fascinating to acknowledge the diversity of people when looking through my camera lens. I started seeing details I would normally never notice. My interest in photography grew bigger by the day. I captured joy, love, sadness, culture, life, movement and so much more. Countless friends, strangers, artists, dj’s, dancers, young people and old souls became my canvas for the perfect shot.
After the introduction of mobile phones, with decent camera option, my job got a whole lot more difficult. This field of photography was coming to an end. I was ready to change my course and focus.
The dedication I felt to change path gave me the drive I needed to continue. In 2013 I widened my horizon doing business, extreme sports, 360 degrees and location photography. This under my own name Rick Akkerman photography, the name I still go by these days.
By exploring the different facets of the profession and continually looking at where my strength lies I nowadays work in business, portraits, editorial, fashion and extreme sport photography.
Photos always arouse feelings in any form. My goal is to plot this particular feeling back into my images. I empathize with the person or setting I want to capture which plays a large role in how I work. The most fascinating of photography is working with light, especially flash lights. By working with strobes I can decide which emotion I give the photo.
During my work as a photographer I benefited from my technical and artistic background. Bringing technical perfection and artistic ideas together into one picture is always a great challenge and an even greater goal!
Some of my favorite quotes:
“It’s not the equipment that makes the photo but the photographer and his environment”
“Twist your life, go for passion!!”
