N A U T I L U S boekbinderij en restauratie atelier is a small company offering hand bookbinding and restoration services for private collectors and institutions. The company is owned and managed by Eliane Gomes and based in Haarlem, The Netherlands. All restoration assignments are executed according to the European Confederation of Conservator-Restorers' Organisations (E.C.C.O.) Ethical Code, applying a minimal intervention approach in order to preserve as much as possible the object's integrity and historical value.


Bookbinding is an ancient craft that evolved along more than 3000 years and still being practiced to present days. The field of book restoration is relatively new discipline which includes an eclectic range of subjects such as fine arts, science (chemistry, biology, technology), history, archaeology, design, mechanics, production, business insight and project management. Alongside the special skills necessary for its application.

A professional book restorer needs to be a skilled hand bookbinder, and receive specialized training on the area. Therefore, not all bookbinders will necessarily be book restorers.

Parallel to restoration, I offer hand bookbinding services and solutions such as handmade portfolios, presence books, travel journals, documents and facsimile bindings, historical binding reproductions, protective book boxes. Each project is unique.
