Geschiedenis

How to get to Giethoorn from the Schiphol Airport by car:

Take the Highway A4 in direction of Amsterdam and soon take the A10 in direction of Almere/Amersfoort.
Take on the A10 the exit Watergraafsmeer and immediately choose the lane for the A1 in direction of Almere/Amersfoort.
Near Muiderberg take the A6 in direction of Almere/Lelystad.
On the A6 after Lelystad take exit 13 in direction of Nagele.
You are now on a road heading to the UNESCO site of SCHOKLAND (nice visit!).
After Schokland drive via the villages of Ens and Kraggenburg to the little town of Vollenhove and from Vollenhove continu to Sint Jansklooster and finally to Giethoorn.
It is in total 124 km and it takes 1,5 hours.

By public transportation:

Take the direct train to Leeuwarden and leave the train at the railway station of Steenwijk or take the train to Amersfoort and change trains there. From Amersfoort take the train to Leeuwarden and leave the train at the railway station of Steenwijk.
From the railway station of Steenwijk take bus 70 in direction of Zwolle and leave at bus stop "Dominee T.O. Hylkemaweg" in Giethoorn (once per hour) or better take the taxi or the regio-taxi from the railway station in Steenwijk. In front of that railway station you can push a button to call for the regio-taxi.
Keep in mind that most of the addresses in Giethoorn are 15 minutes on walking distance of the bus stop ... Check which bus stop!
If you come by (regio-)taxi it is a sort walk to you accommodation and mostly they can provide you with a small trolley to bring your luggage to your place.
It takes alltogether 2,5 tot 3 hours to get there from the airport by public transportation and the total travel costs one way are Euro 23,00 per person (price 2012 based on train + bus)
