This nonprofit initiates, supports and promotes lost fishing gear removal initiatives and shows the problem to a wide audience. www.ghostfishing.org
Ghost Fishing Foundation is an international non-profit organization, executed by volunteer technical divers, which initiates, supports and promotes lost fishing gear removal initiatives in oceans, seas and local waters. Since 2012 they have run lost fishing gear survey and removal projects in the North Sea, Adriatic Sea, Aegean Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Pacific Ocean in cooperation with various environmental organizations and with the support of a continuously growing group of volunteer technical divers. Their strength lies in spreading the message, which they do by distributing photographic/video footage through (social) media and talk on conferences and events to make the public aware of the issues caused by lost or discarded fishing gear.
We are very interested in a worldwide collaboration with other dive teams and like to participate in existing projects or start new projects all over the world by:
* Physically removing nets, fishing gear and other marine debris * Investigating and documenting local situations (photo/film) * Ensuring diving safety * Recycling marine debris * Sharing knowledge and best practices * Education & presentation
