Info Zwaardkunst voor Body, Mind & Spirit Geschiedenis What is Haedong Kumdo ? Haedong = Eastern sea (ancient name of Korea) Kum = Sword Do = Way Haedong Kumdo is the traditional sword martial art from Korea. Developed in the battlefield, Haedong Kumdo was initially created to allow one warrior to fight against many opponents with a real sword. Nowadays, training is accessible to everyone who would like to improve their skills but also their physical and spiritual balance. Grandmaster Kim Jeong Seong, founder and Chong Jae Nim (president) of the United World Haedong Kumdo Federation, has developed the Jinyoung Ssang Kum Ryu school, emphasizing the simultaneous use of two swords and the internal work. Beginners start training safely with wooden, bamboo and sponge swords. Gradually, as their skills and mastery evolve, they will use real swords for specific exercises. Practicing Haedong Kumdo is a very rich experience that everyone can enjoy thanks to the huge diversity of exercises. Control A good body and mental control is important in every martial art, especially in Haedong Kumdo because of the use of a weapon. A large range of bare hand exercises has been developed in order to help the trainees to improve their concentration and body control. Technique The main objective of Haedong Kumdo is to learn, improve and master different routines. These routines include all the skills and positions needed for efficient fighting. The Jinyoung Ssang Kum Ryu school has particularly developed the use of two swords by creating two swords routines. Precision Once trainees have learned the basic techniques, they can practice a large range of exercises to improve them: extinguishing candle flames without touching it, cutting paper with wooden swords, cutting bamboo, straw and paper with a real sword... Combativeness Haedong Kumdo is much more than manipulating a sword on your own. Fighting is an essential part of the work because trainees can use and try in real situations the techniques they have learned. Armors are not used in Haedong Kumdo therefore trainees use only sponge swords when fighting. Creativity Haedong Kumdo is still a living and evolving martial art. Trainees not only learned routines, they also have the opportunity to create their own routines, alone (sword dance) or with partners (creative sparring), with music, costumes... www.springdragon.nl
