On-land harbor rising from a polluted brownfield. De Ceuvel has transformed a post-Industrial plot and discarded houseboats into a thriving and creative eco-hub
Attention! This is the page of cleantech playground and urban renewal project De Ceuvel. The bar-restaurant Café de Ceuvel is part of this project, but has it's own facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/CeuvelCafe
After the municipality of Amsterdam put out a call for admissions, a group of architects initiated a winning proposal for the old Ceuvel-Volharding shipyard plot. In our proposal, the heavily polluted grounds of the old shipyard we're developed in a unique way. We up-cycled second-hand houseboats (a waste product in The Netherlands) into creative office spaces. The houseboats were put on land and refurbished. All boats are docked at a twirling boardwalk that allows people to walk through the dense greens. The site and the offices were developed with a pioneering mix of sustainable building, energy and waste-management techniques. For example, the polluted grounds of the yard are purified by a unique plant mix. The boat-offices are equipped with solar panels and outfitted with compost toilets.
After De Ceuvel opened for use, in the course of a few months, De Ceuvel quickly developed from an architectural novelty and cleantech showcase, into a blossoming creative community and cultural centre. The houseboat-offices host a number of different creative and eco entrepreneurs that work on their own projects as well as shared projects. At the same time, the thriving bar-restaurant serves as a focal point of the creative community, attracting more creatives and likeminded individuals. De Ceuvel now regularly hosts all kinds of cultural events ranging from music evenings, to cinema, lectures, festivals, yoga, and sustainability workshops.
